Meet Saralyn

Career highlights:

I joined the industry after doing a degree in physics and a masters in nuclear science and technology. Almost immediately, I became a YGN volunteer which has resulted in many highlights such as overseeing our COP26 activities in Glasgow in 2021 and being YGN Chair in 2022

What was your dream profession when you were young?

I wanted to be everything- a doctor, a pilot and an architect (to name a few). Being in the nuclear industry now and reflecting on my past interests and experiences, I’ve found that nuclear is exactly where I am supposed to be.

How have mentors influenced your career progression?

My mentors encouraged and guided me to assess what’s possible in my career. For example, my mentors gave me the support I needed to say yes to a fantastic opportunity at GBN by giving me a ‘push’ to realise what I can achieve. I nearly said no to GBN based on other commitments and would have missed an opportunity of a lifetime.

Do you have a well-being tip you can share with us?

You can’t enjoy and have fun at what you do unless you’re being authentic about who you are.

What are the biggest barriers to inclusion in the nuclear industry?

In the region I grew up, there weren’t many opportunities for me to be exposed to the nuclear industry; I just
happened to come across it after my degree. We must reach out to more areas within the UK, pushing through
the location barriers to showcase nuclear and all its opportunities.
