Exciting collaboration set to further gender diversity in UK nuclear

Three leading organisations in the nuclear sector have joined forces to help improve gender diversity within the industry.

Women in Nuclear (WiN), Young Generation Network (YGN) and the Nuclear Skills Strategy Group (NSSG) are collaborating to achieve gender balance within the nuclear workforce.

One of the group’s first initiatives, announced at this year’s WiN UK Annual Conference is the hosting of a CEO diversity evening where the agenda will focus on practical actionable steps industry leaders can play in attracting and retaining a workforce, that better reflects the diversity of the communities served.

Making the announcement, Lynsey Valentine from WiN UK said:

This collaboration is a testament to our efforts to improve the gender balance and increase the pace of change across our industry. By working together, we have the opportunity to put our commitments into action, influencing the makeup of our workforce for the better.”

“The launch of an event focusing on CEO engagement, demonstrates a top-down commitment from leaders to step-up and play their part in the creation of a more diverse and inclusive industry. We look forward to working with all colleagues to continue to ensure nuclear remains a sector for all.”

The new partnership will leverage the knowledge, skills and capabilities of each organisation, with work underway to deliver a co-ordinated, sector wide approach to diversity and inclusion. This comes at a time when ambitious new plans for nuclear, outlined in the British Energy Security Strategy, puts the sector in prime position as a powerful engine for job creation and economic growth.

Over an initial five years, the partners will engage in a number of wide-ranging strategic initiatives to boost diversity.  From careers outreach activity designed to attract girls and women into the industry to the development of female leaders within the workforce. The collaboration represents a major push for the attraction, retention and development of skills within the UK Nuclear Industry.

Further details regarding the scope of the partnership are covered in a Memorandum of Understanding.
